Citizens Fire Academy
Experience the Dormont Fire Department’s (DFD) inner workings through our immersive Citizens Fire Academy (CFA). This free program offers a comprehensive, hands-on look at how the DFD is organized and operates, with most sessions held at the DFD Fire Station.

Volunteer Opportunities:
Our volunteers comprise Dormont residents and individuals from surrounding communities. CFA graduates who wish to continue supporting the DFD are encouraged to apply to join as volunteer firefighters, helping to respond to calls and incidents.
Next Session:
The next Dormont Citizens Fire Academy Class will be held in October 2024. Classes will be held during the weekdays except for the prep/burn class, which will be on a weekend.

Week 1: Fire Department Overview
This session includes the history of the Dormont Fire Department and an overview of the organization and structure. The critical responsibilities of each division and daily operations will be discussed. Fire Safety Education - Fire/Safety House, Home Safety
Week 2: Hose/Aerial Ladder/Fire Extinguishers
In this session, attendees will learn how to handle and deploy hose lines, the step gun, and the deck gun. They will also learn about the aerial ladder and how to use a fire extinguisher.
Week 3: Forcible Entry/Search/SCBA use
In this session, attendees are introduced to the forcible door prop and learn how to gain entry with different tools and techniques. They will also learn search techniques to locate and find a victim and experience breathing air from a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) pack.
Week 4: Basic Vehicle Rescue
Have you wondered what it’s like to cut open a car door using hydraulic tools or open a windshield with a cutter? In this session, participants will learn about vehicle stabilization, using hydraulic tools, and techniques that may be used in a car accident.
Week 5: EMS Training
Participants will receive training in basic first aid, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Automatic External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) treatment of cardiac arrest, resulting in certification. We will also tour our EMS partner Medical Rescue Team South Authority’s main station.
Week 6 (Session 1): Burn Prep
This session introduces participants to the SCBA fill station, provides a refresher on hose lines, and performs SCBA and gear checks. This is all done in preparation for the burn class later in the week.
Week 7 (Session 2): Burn Class
Attendees will participate in a live fire exercise at the Washington County Training Academy. We will learn about fire behavior and witness the power of fire. Participants will be fully dressed in turnout gear and will utilize their SCBAs.
Week 8: Graduation
Graduates of CFA will be recognized at the next Dormont Borough Council meeting with a graduation dinner immediately following at the Back Alley Brewing Company.
